Landmark n°9. Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy)
It is the main Catholic Church in Isla de Maipo and one of the most characteristic buildings of the town. Its construction dates from 1883 and thus its bell tower follows a neoclassical style. Like many other buildings in the Chilean central area, this temple withstood the strong earthquake of August 1906, but the severity of the damage made it necessary to rebuild it in 1926.
In 1829, a flood caused by the overflowing of the Maipo River swept through the area and the survivors took refuge in the sanctuary where they made a promise to the Virgin if she helped them. She was taken upriver and, after a day and a night, the river changed its course definitively and saved the people. The last Sunday of September commemorates this miracle and everybody dresses up.
